55-year old woman successfully undergoes 3 consecutive cardiac procedures
July 20, 2022 07:45 am IST – CHENNAI:
She suffered a heart attack followed by recurrent episodes of irregular heartbeats
Doctors at Kauvery Hospital here performed three successive procedures to save the life of a 55-year-old woman who suffered a cardiac attack and a ventricular tachycardia (VT) storm (life-threatening recurrent episodes of irregular heartbeats in a short span of time).
Addressing the media here on Tuesday, the doctors said they first performed a coronary angioplasty to place a stent and open the blocked artery that caused the heart attack, followed by a radiofrequency (RF) ablation procedure to treat the irregular heart rhythm. The woman subsequently received a percutaneous defibrillator (a kind of pacemaker) implant as a precaution against future episodes of irregular heartbeats.
The doctors said Radha Balaji, who worked as a school teacher, had to undergo external defibrillation 14 times within a span of three to four days to control the VT storm until the RF ablation procedure was performed to permanently address it. “Not many people can handle multiple defibrillation procedures in such a short span. Moreover, these were mostly done when she was conscious. This shows her resolve, which helped immensely in her recovery,” said C. Sundar, senior consultant interventional cardiologist.

Six-hour surgery at Chennai's Kauvery Hospital saves patient’s life
July 20, 2022 07:45 am IST – CHENNAI:
The patient is now back in his hometown, has resumed work and is being closely monitored.
CHENNAI: Kauvery Hospital Chennai successfully performed a six-hour minimally invasive Cardiac Electrophysiology intervention procedure, to correct a potentially fatal acute heart rhythm problem, of genetic origin, in a 42-year-old IT professional.
He was received at the emergency with palpitations and giddiness; ECG showed ventricular tachycardia (VT). It was reverted with multiple electric shocks (defibrillation). In VT, the heartbeat is abnormally fast, 200 or more beats per minute. This makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood and maintain circulation. If this occurs, the individual would develop shortness of breath, dizziness, or even lose consciousness. A sustained VT can degrade to ventricular fibrillation, an even faster and chaotic rhythm, leading to sudden cardiac arrest.

Ahead of World Heart Day, Kauvery Hospital launches Restart Heart Foundation
Sep 26, 2022 17:35 am IST – CHENNAI:
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], September 26 (ANI/NewsVoir): On the occasion of World Heart Day, Kauvery Hospital launched the Restart Heart Foundation, an initiative to address the rising numbers of , educate the community on the prevention of cardiac arrests and equip them with the skills to provide an immediate response during emergencies. Through this foundation, Automated External Defibrillators (AED) have been installed at Semmozhi Poonga, Tidel Park and Vivekanandar Illam. (Ice House). The inauguration was by Thiru. Dr Ezhilan MLA Thousand Lights Constituency.
An automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a device that is used in an emergency situation – a cardiac arrest. The AED system includes accessories, such as a battery and pad electrodes, that are necessary for the AED to detect and interpret an electrocardiogram and deliver an electrical shock. The portable device gives voice prompts – step-by-step instructions – to be followed by anyone who has received minimal training, to use the AED to help revive the heart rhythm of an individual who suffered a cardiac arrest in a public place, thereby keeping him/her stable until an ambulance arrives for further treatment.
